This call was made by Mr. Senyonjo Mukwano coordinator PRIFODE and Mr.Nyemera Trevor vice LC11 Kiguma parish while appearing live on ToroDev weekly radio live talkshow on 25th March 2018. The live interactive discussion focused on how to address key challenges affecting performance of learners in Mugusu sub county.
“The poor performance in schools has been as results of absenteeism of both pupils and teachers, late coming of teachers, lack of scholastic materials, lack of parental support among others, some of these challenges can be addressed if parents perform their duties effectively, like supporting their children with all the required school requirements”. Said Mukwano Ssenyonjjo from coordinator PRIFODE advocacy forum.
Mukwano further said duty bearers should combine efforts to address some challenges like lobbying for better infrastructures in government aided schools, local council one should work with parents to monitor children who are out of schools and take serious actions.
“The Government should engage leaders in monitoring and supervision exercises to support the work of area inspector of schools and they can sit together with school leadership to address some of the challenges like discipline, teachers needs among”. Said Nyemera Trevor vice chairperson LCII Kiguma Sub County.
The panelists recommended that parents should support their children with scholastic materials this will help to solve the problem of high dropouts and advised parents to play their roles and see children get better education. Said Mukwano Senyonjo during the talkshow.
He added that parents should be sensitized and educated on the importance of education such that they can be able to buy school necessities and fully support their children to stay in schools this will help to solve some of the challenges that are affecting education sectors such as absenteeism of pupils and high drop out.
During the live discussion more than 40 listeners from Rwenzori region called in to give their views; “Lack of staff quarters in most government aided UPE schools has increased to poor performance in schools since most teachers walk long distances to attend classes and this has resulted into late coming and absenteeism of teachers in schools”. Said Hussein a caller from Kyenjojo district.
“The Government has failed to solve a problem of teachers, pupil’s ratio in UPE schools due to over load teachers get over whelmed classes”. Said Kojjo Rogers from Haruongo Kabarole district”.
