DataCities Project (2023-2025)

DataCities: Supporting Practical and Resilient Data Systems in Uganda’s New Cities (October 2023 – September 2025)

Objective:

The DataCities project aims to enhance the resilience and practicality of data systems within Uganda’s newly established cities. This initiative is focused on improving urban governance through the development and implementation of robust data infrastructure that can support decision-making processes and enhance service delivery.

Overview:

This multi-year project is a collaborative effort involving ToroDev, Sunbird AI, and the UN Global Pulse Lab Kampala, with technical support from the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of ICT in Uganda. The project is generously funded by the Hewlett Foundation, USA. The DataCities project is part of an 8-year program designed to address the challenges faced by new cities in Uganda as they transition to more structured and data-driven governance models.

Key Activities:

  • Data Infrastructure Development: Establishing and strengthening data collection, analysis, and sharing mechanisms within city administrations.
  • Capacity Building: Training local government officials and stakeholders in data management and utilization to ensure sustainability.
  • Public Engagement: Involving citizens in the data collection process to promote transparency and accountability in local governance.

Impact:

The project is expected to significantly improve urban governance in Uganda by providing city authorities with the tools and knowledge necessary to make informed decisions. By building resilient data systems, the project will help ensure that these new cities are better equipped to manage growth, respond to challenges, and provide improved services to their residents.
