ToroDev for the last 7 years has been promoting public accountability for improved service delivery through live radio talkshows. The organization has been partnering with the 7 local FM radio stations to conduct live radio discussions on outcomes of improving essential service delivery with focus on rule of law, multiparty democracy, accountability and transparency of the public resources allocation processes by the national parliament.
Radio talkshows have been aiming also at improving grassroots’ understanding of democracy, accountability and transparency to ensure that local citizens are well prepared and competent to actively engage their duty bearers.
On 1st April 2018 Hon Nyemera Sam councilor of Busaiga parish was hosted together with Mugisa Julius councilor who represents people with disabilities at Harugongo sub county council & honorable Mwesige Christopher who represents Kyakaigo parish who appreciated the role played by radio to advocate for better services and give accountability to citizens for what they have so far done to build on their manifestos.
Honorable councilors requested members of parliament to work together with sub county leaders to advocate for resource and provide better services to citizens in their respective areas.
“As a sub county we have sensitized parents to support their children and keep them in school school and to be part of the team that monitors and supervises schools and on how to play their roles as parents especially on catering for school necessities such that children can be able to stay in schools” Said Hon.Nyemera Samuel .
Hon Samuel further emphasized that Harugongo sub county is experiencing challenges in education sector for example the whole sub county has only one secondary school which is privately owned, this has caused many students to walk long distances to access the only school, we are here to lobby and inform education department and member of parliament to lobby for Harugongo sub county a government aided secondary school
On the accountability part the panelists went further and shared some success stories achieved so far since they were elected. In the water sector a borehole near Harugongo primary school was worked on after a long time of being out of usage, the shallow wells were constructed at Busaiga primary school, Mugamba and Bulyanyenje villages to solve the issue of water shortage and provide people access to clean and safe water. More achievement are on road sector where Kanyankere-Harugongo, Kakungwa Busiga,mugamba Nyakabira,Nyakaig Bulyanyenje, Nyakabira and Bulyambuzi access roads were opened.
During the 2 hours live discussion 30 people called in to contribute to the live radio discussion and these were some of their views;
